What’s in it for them?

Each of our projects offers something for you, and for the people that you are volunteering for. Read on for a summary of what your hosts can gain from your support, and click here to find out what’s in it for you.

All projects:

  • Financial support for their project
  • Physical support with the day to day running of the project/classes
  • An intercultural exchange – working alongside someone from a different culture

Conservation

As with ‘All projects’, as well as the following:

  • Fisherman’s Cooperative: Support in the maintenance of a project that is otherwise carried out by few local volunteers, with very little support from the Mexican government or other outside organisations.
  • Word of mouth – volunteers informing more people of the work needed to be done to support such projects.

  • Sea Turtles: An increased chance of survival; by increasing the number of volunteers on the beach, we increase the number of nests saved from poachers and other predators, and therefore release more hatchlings into the sea.

Community:

Teaching English

As with ‘All projects’, as well as the following:

  • Teachers: Chance to develop their own English skills with a native English speaker, and learn any new techniques passed on from volunteers.

  • Students: Chance to learn English directly from native English speakers, giving them a chance to advance to a higher level in school, and therefore increase their chances of going on into higher education or securing employment (speaking English is required for most well paid jobs in Mexico, particularly in areas of tourism)

Special Education

As with ‘All projects’, as well as the following:

  • Teachers: Support with the management of the students that attend the school. The only funding the school receives from the government is for a limited number of staff salaries, the student-teacher ratio is therefore very high
  • Students: A lower student-teacher ratio, allowing for more personal attention per student
  • The motivation that someone would travel so far to help

Fundraising

As with ‘All projects’, as well as the following:

  • A significant contribution towards a children’s charity which donates money to the educational and medical costs of children in the area
  • Physical support in carrying out the work that the funds are allocated towards
  • Word of mouth – volunteers spreading the news to others who may donate or support the work in the future

Learning Spanish

  • Chance to communicate more freely with volunteers, and therefore making the most of their support on any of the projects
