Cooperativa de Pesca
Roca Negra
The Cooperativa
de Pesca Roca Negra (Roca Negra fisherman’s
cooperative) is the registered group in charge of Majahuas
Biological Station and must rely on donations from government
bodies and outsiders in order to maintain and develop their
sea turtle conservation programme. There are continuous costs
involved in running such a programme, including petrol and
vehicle maintenance for patrolling the beach, materials for
collecting and burying nests, maintaining water and power
supplies to the camp, and much more.
Each of
the dedicated members of the Cooperative must give up two days
of paid work each month, when their turn comes around to patrol
their beach and look after their camp. None of the Cooperative
members are Biologists or hold any qualifications relevant
to the management of a turtle camp, but from the little money
they receive from the government, as well as some outside funding,
they manage to pay a biologist from Guadalajara to visit the
camp from time to time manage that side of their project.
Our relationship
with the Cooperative means that they do not have to send so
many of their own volunteers to camp (who would usually loose
out on paid work), and have support in carrying out the day
to day work. On top of this, Experience MexECO staff are on
hand to provide advice on the running of the conservation project
and its development (between UK and local staff we have marine
biologists, zoologists and biologists).
One of Experience MexECO’s
policies is also to provide long term assistance to each of
our projects, in this case by training the members of the cooperative
to use the growing number of eco-tourists in their area to
their advantage.
